I started making my stock log public at lamdar.com. It’s pretty much just my total market thoughts and some stocks I look at. I’ve been good in the past for logging what stocks I like and why, but not so much about stocks I look at but don’t like, so hopefully I’ll be able to keep that record here. Don’t expect it to be very verbose though so don’t go making any trades based on something you see there.

How do you protect speed cameras from getting vandalized? Easy, you put security cameras on them to watch for the vandals. Hmm… so what do you do when the vandals start knocking those cameras over before they vandalize the speed cameras? I guess you’ll need a security camera to monitor the security camera too. Ahhh, what happens when they start hitting the security camera that’s monitoring the security camera???

In what is probably an attempt by the Republican party at boosting the images of George Bush and Arnold Schwarzenegger, a new candidate for the Wisconsin secretary of state lets you see how much worse it could be. I mean, would you rather have a 65 year old groupie that writes things like, “Here he was, in the flesh! Oh! My God! He was soooo CUTE!” over our current leaders? Granted, she was a bit younger when she wrote that… a young and spry 63. Of course all those red states could always switch to blue, but we all know that’s not happening anytime soon.

Fat girls shouldn’t reproduce

The British Fertility Society is recommending that very obese women (with a BMI > 36) should be denied fertility treatment. For those that don’t know, to get a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 36, a girl that’s 5′4″ would have to tip the scales at 210. Girls that have a BMI over 29 would be forced to “address their weight” before they could get treatment. In the Ali G movie, he makes a law to only allow the hot girls into the country, but this would be nipping the problem at the source. Now if only they could devise some scientific ugly index so that the ugly skinny girls could be weeded out too.

Investment advisors

A little while ago, out of curiosity, I signed up for those free promo subscriptions to a few investment advisor magazines. I figured any new source of investing knowledge would be useful, and who should know more about it than investment advisors. Much to my chagrin, the magazines contained almost no information on investing though, and only information on how to market your services, retain clients, and make money off those clients. Think about that for a second…

Who’s a threat?

I’m all about setting goals, but this is ridiculous. How do quotas for adding people to the watch list help? The worst thing is that every false addition to the list deteriorates the ability to find real terrorists with it. It’s kind of like listening to a fanboy talk about the latest (Apple|AMD|Trojans|X-Men) stuff. You know there might be one or two good points in there, but you just can’t sift through all the biased garbage to recognize them.

Real estate always goes up?

If you’re buying a house right now because you need a place to live and like the benefits that go along with owning your home, that’s a good thing as long as you’re able to make whatever the monthly payments are. If you want to buy a house because it’s a great investment and you’ve heard people quote the fact that real estate has never gone down, you are quite uninformed. While it’s true that real estate hasn’t gone down across the nation, locally many cities have seen declines. I’ve been hearing many stories about real estate advice that people have been getting, and I find quite a lot of it is very irresponsible. Here’s a page that chronicles real estate articles from the NY Times about the market in New Jersey through the 80’s and 90’s. Note that the main decline was over several years so those hoping for a quick pop will likely be disappointed. “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

How to keep people honest

Is this really all it takes to keep people honest? Sadly it contradicts any previous experiments that sought to show that altruism in humans is innate. Why did I spend so much money on a Clifford alarm then? Maybe all I had to do was hang some eyes on my rearview mirror.

How are we supposed to have fun late at night if this phone blocks our friends from drunk dialing? It says it can save dignity, but I say it’s just taking away a source of drunken entertainment.
