With all the fear of terrorist attacks, the Department of Homeland Security is getting a lot of money to ease these fears. I don’t really think putting a bunch of cameras in the middle of nowhere is a great way to stop the terrorists though. Makes me happy to know that my tax dollars are being well spent.
I’ve been busy with work so I haven’t really been looking at my normal news feeds, but boy, was tonight an exciting night for UCLA basketball. Funny how 1 minute of excitement turns 39 minutes of horrible basketball into one of the greatest games.
I don’t know whether to applaud this or berate it. On the one hand, it’s quite impressive and the students probably learned a lot about making a huge project work from beginning to end. On the other hand, they wasted the gym for a whole year. Ok, I guess the good outweighs the bad by a little bit. I wish my school did something like this instead of the standard eighth grade egg drop project.
With the rampant spread of identity theft, I’m sure everyone is careful to shred all those credit card offers they get periodically in the mail. That’s probably still not enough though as shown by this guy’s little experiment. Maybe you should burn those applications instead and pee on the ashes since credit card companies will still take them after they’re torn and taped up.
On the cutting edge of science is the new study showing that beer guts can help your survival in severe car crashes. I like how there are studies to prove that pretty much everything has a good side nowadays. It goes along the new movement to eliminate any sense of failure for kids by doing things like giving out 20th place trophies and getting rid of tag from playgrounds because it hurts the slow kids’ feelings. By not accepting that you can fail sometimes, you set yourself up to feel even worse when you hit the real world and can’t do something. Either that or you end up having a sense of entitlement and whine a lot until you can get things you don’t earn.
I really like OS X, but it kills me everytime someone’s reason for liking it is that it’s a lot more secure than Windows. The only reason there weren’t many widely publicized security holes in OS X is because not enough people had Macs for it to matter. Now that Apple is picking up a little bit of steam it seems like the number of exploits is ramping up at the same rate, as shown by the severe safari security hole and the hacking OS X constest that was up for 30 minutes. Hopefully if you’re running OS X you’re not just running the default installation and thinking you’re safe.
I don’t know if this woman is just confused or what. Maybe they won’t notice that the woman giving the urine sample is standing at the urinal? Definitely makes me wary of using public microwaves now though.
It was only a matter of time before scientists started finding ways to control living things to turn them into spy tools. I think my next project should be learning to control birds to get them to poop on people I don’t like.
